Illegal settlers expected to only listen to mayor: business leader

July 5, 2011
INFORMAL settlers, whose houses in Barangay Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr., in Agdao, Davao City were to be demolished Friday, will expectedly only listen to City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte.
This was the view shared by Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) president Dr. Maria Lourdes Monteverde, as she expressed support to the city mayor.
“Hindi talaga naniniwala ang mga tao doon sa police. They were there at that time, but the people only listen to the mayor. I am not sure of what happened at that time but what is two hours for you to wait for the mayor to arrive,” she said.
Monteverde resides near the area where the demolition was supposed to take place Friday.
The city mayor manhandled court sheriff Abe Andres who enforced the demolition order issued by Judge Emmanuel Carpio of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 16 without her.
She was asking for a two-hour delay because she wanted to be in the area during the demolition to avoid bloodshed.
Duterte was still attending to the needs of thousands of evacuees who were affected by the massive flooding in Matina and Bangkal areas early Wednesday when she asked for the extension.
“Nagkagulo talaga noon dito sa amin banda, they had to cordon the area kasi nagliparan na ang mga bato. My brother (Councilor Tomas Monteverde IV) was with the mayor at that time and doon lang nahinto pagdating ni mayor. (Violence erupted in the area and the police had to cordon the area because stones were flying. It only stopped upon the arrival of the mayor),” Monteverde added.
Monteverde said DCCCII is ready to issue a statement of support for the city mayor to the investigating team of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) “if there is a need.”
“Actually, before the demolition, we already have plans to talk to the mayor regarding our programs for the informal settlers here,” Monteverde said.
She said they understand the frustration of the city mayor that resulted in the unfortunate punching incident on Friday.
“We would like convey to the pertinent agencies that we have to work as one with the calamity that has been going on and another flooding na naman happened. We have to work as one and we need the mayor at these times,” Monteverde said.
She added that they want DILG to know and understand the real picture behind the incident and that they will be backing up the mayor 100 percent.
For his part, Vicente Lao, president of the Mindanao Business Council (MBC), assured their full support to the city mayor during the investigation.
“Ano naman kasi yung two hours na hinihingi ni Mayor sa sheriff, pwede naman sana kasi yung pagbigyan to avoid any violence. That was the mayor’s objective in the first place (What is a two hour extension that the mayor was asking the sheriff, he could have heeded the request to avoid violence),” Lao said during a local TV interview.
