House leader told: Get your facts straight
SENATOR Antonio Trillanes IV told House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez to leave him out of an effort to have detained Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo granted access to mobile phones and a laptop computer.
At the very least, Trillanes said, Suarez should get his facts right.
Suarez earlier this week urged House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. to push for perks that he said Trillanes enjoyed while detained for his involvement in mutinies against the Arroyo government.
“Senator Trillanes was declared guilty yet he was allowed to work as a senator in a detention center where he could hold committee hearings and had access to communications. I called the attention of the Speaker on this and I told him it’s his duty to protect a member because it can happen to any member,” Suarez has been quoted as saying.
But Trillanes, granted amnesty in 2010 by President Benigno Aquino III, said he did not have access to communication devices in the first few years of detention. He said his people had to act as go-betweens with senators and resource persons so he could do his work from Camp Crame, where he was detained.
“Admittedly, there were a few times that we were able to secretly bring in mobile phones and laptops but it was against the wishes and not with the consent of my custodians. In fact, our quarters were regularly subjected to periodic searches because of that,” he said Sunday.
He said restrictions were only relaxed at the end of Arroyo’s presidency.
“While I do not begrudge (Quezon) Representative Suarez for asserting Mrs. Arroyo’s right to serve as an elected representative of Pampanga, he should at least get his facts straight. Contrary to his claim, I was never declared guilty by any court of any offense. Likewise, Mrs. Arroyo’s government did its best to make it difficult if not impossible for me to work while in detention. It is not true that they allowed me to use mobile phones and computers. They also banned me from receiving guests and holding committee hearings while under custody,” he said.
Arroyo, accused of electoral sabotage last year, is now under hospital arrest at Veterans’ Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City. The Commission on Elections has asked the court to have Arroyo transferred out of VMMC.
“If she is already well, there is absolutely no reason she should be allowed to continue to stay at the hospital. That would clearly be giving her special treatment,” Trillanes said.
