Hospital’s head injury unit opens

GUAGUA — The new Head Injury Unit of the Diosdado P. Macapagal Memorial Hospital (DPMMH) here was inaugurated Tuesday in a bid to provide free surgery and services to patients suffering from head injuries.
Governor Lilia Pineda led the ribbon cutting of the new facility, accompanied by DPMMH chief Dr. Eddie Ponio and Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The facility is managed by the DPMMH and volunteer doctors who devote their time and free services for the operation of the center.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Jay Rivera said the facility — the first of its kind in Central Luzon — aims to cater to victims of vehicular accidents.
He said that as of the latest statistics, there is an average of 10 vehicular accidents in Pampanga every day.
“We need all the help we can get to make this new facility more responsible to the number of patients we have. Since we have started a few days ago, our facility can now cater to certain cases that our facilities and services could address,” Rivera said.
Ponio, for his part, said the facility will be a new addition to the expanded services of the hospital, which now has a dialysis unit and is in the process of acquiring other needed equipment through the help of Governor Pineda.
“This new facility will also deal with hydrocephalus and trauma cases. We hope to bring costs at a minimum and get more support from other doctors in the province,” Ponio said.
He said the team of doctor-volunteers is made up of young successful doctors who devote their time into helping others.
Ponio said volunteers include surgeons and dieticians. He said the facility will be open to the public, particularly to indigent patients of Pampanga.
Pineda said she will give more attention to the other development needs of DPMMH, adding that she will coordinate with the Head Injury Unit to improve their facilities and equipment. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
