Hospital introduces non-surgical breast biopsy
April 29, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A Pampanga-based private hospital recently introduced a non-surgical system of identifying breast abnormalities that could lead to cancer.
The Mother Theresa of Calcutta Medical Center (MTCMC) opened to the public on Tuesday the Mammotome Breast Biopsy System.
In a press conference, MTCMC resident doctor Rey Melchor Santos said the new system helps doctors diagnose if breast abnormalities are cancerous.
Biopsies with the Mammotome, Santos said, are performed in less than an hour, require no stitches and do not require patients to go inside an operating room.
“This can be performed even within their offices. We’ll just insert a needle while the patient is under anesthesia. They won’t feel anything and they can even go back to work after the procedure,” Santos said.
The Mammotome, Santos said, can biopsy a wide range of breast abnormalities from microcalcifications, tiny deposits of calcium within the breast to palpable lumps within the breast, which may indicate presence of cancer.
Procedures with the Mammotome involve the one-time insertion of a probe directly into the area of the breast that appeared suspicious based on a physical examination or a mammogram finding.
With ultrasound or stereotactic guidance, a doctor uses the Mammotome to gently vacuum, cut and remove suspicious tissue for examination and evaluation.
Only a small adhesive strip is used to cover the incision.
The MTCMC is the first hospital in Central Luzon to offer the Mammotome.
Other hospitals that offer the procedure are in Manila and one in Baguio City.
However, the MTCMC is offering the procedure at 40 percent cheaper than its usual cost.
“We’ll be offering it starting from P20,000 depending on the abnormality. We would like to offer it at an affordable price so Kapampangans, even people from Central and Northern Luzon, will get to avail of the service,” Santos said.
Maureen Santos, 44, had a breast biopsy with the original Mammotome system after she felt a lump in a breast, while a mammogram showed something suspicious.
“I was glad I was able to avoid open surgery. The procedure was relatively quick and easy and actually helped take some of my fear away about the possibility of having cancer,” Santos said.
Santos said her husband was beside her while the doctor was doing the procedure.
“If I had an open surgery, that would not have been possible,” Santos said. After the procedure, a radiographic tissue marker can be placed directly into the biopsied area to help manage follow-up care, including future mammograms and biopsies.
The Mammotome has been used to perform more than three million invasive biopsies worldwide.
Dr. Santos said women should not get scared in knowing their breast abnormalities.
“Early detection can help patients, including their doctors to avoid the lethal cancer,” Santos said.
Interested patients may contact Dr. Santos at 861-4607 to 08 local 102 and 103 or Dr. Noel Evangelista at 09193829640 for inquiries.
