‘Hero cop’ promoted
June 01, 2011
MABALACAT — A police officer who risked his life during a hostage drama on Monday received on-the-spot promotion from Central Luzon Police Director Edgardo Ladao.
During a visit at the Saint Rafael Hospital here, Ladao addressed the wounded policeman, Police Officer (PO) 2 Eduardo Santiago of the Laguna police, as “PO3 Santiago”.
Santiago sustained multiple stab wounds on the chest and hands after the hostage-taker identified as Sidro Brine of Cutud, Angeles City assaulted him.
Brine hijacked a Five Star bus with two children on board from Pasay in Manila around 1 p.m. Monday. The bus was headed for Alaminos, Pangasinan, said Superintendent Rolly Mendoza, Mabalacat police chief.
Using a knife, the suspect seized one-year-old Carla Sarmiento of Pampanga and five-year-old Mig Axle Bunustro of Pangasinan, police community relations office chief Superintendent Joanna Rosales said.
Upon reaching a portion of the North Luzon Expressway in Akli, Mexico town, Brine allowed the passengers, including the driver, to get out of the bus.
The driver of another Five Star bus spotted the passengers, parked at the shoulder of the freeway, and asked the driver of the first bus if there is trouble. Santiago of the Laguna police was a passenger of the second bus.
When the driver of the first bus refused to return to the vehicle, Santiago — clad in civilian clothes — volunteered as a driver.
But before boarding the first bus, Santiago informed the NLEx highway patrol team that he is a policeman. He reportedly concealed his gun from the suspect.
The NLEx highway patrol then alerted the Angeles City police and the Mabalacat police about the incident.
The suspect even asked Santiago to make an exit at the Angeles interchange, but the latter said he is not familiar with the area.
They reached the Mabalacat spur road in Barangay Mabiga and made an exit through the said interchange.
A team of policemen, on board a mobile patrol, spotted and chased the bus. Upon seeing the officers, Brine reportedly assaulted Santiago, who eventually rammed the bus onto a quarry truck.
Santiago struggled and managed to pull his firearms and shot the suspect.
Mendoza said they are still establishing Brine’s motive.
The suspect, along with four other men and his son, came from Samar.
But Mendoza said Brine’s companions are not involved in the incident.
“Galing sila sa Samar. Pinangakuan daw yata nung suspek yung kanyang mga kasama na ipapasok ng trabaho dito sa Luzon (They came from Samar. The suspect promised his companions a job here in Luzon),” Mendoza said.
Brine’s body was taken to the Pangilinan Funeral Parlor in this town.
Santiago, who was transferred to the Garcia Hospital in nearby Angeles City, was declared out of danger by attending physicians.
Governor Lilia Pineda lauded the heroism of Santiago. She promised to shoulder the cop’s hospitalization expenses.
