Hacienda Luisita farmers, workers vow to boycott referendum
July 7, 2011
FARMERS and workers at the Hacienda Luisita vowed to boycott a referendum that will ask them to choose between receiving shares of stock in a corporation or tracts of land as part of agrarian reform.
Members of United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) and Alyansa ng Mga Manggagawang Bukid sa Asyenda Luisita (Ambala) rejected the proposed referendum on Wednesday, which was indicated in a Supreme Court (SC) decision regarding the redistribution of the 6,443-hectare property.
“Even if the farmers want to receive land, they are coerced into choosing stocks because of money, deception, and threats. That’s what we want to avoid,” ULWU acting president and Ambala vice chairman Lito Bais said in a protest held at the SC compound in Manila.
“We will boycott the referendum,” he added, a day after the High Court issued the ruling that called for the referendum.
Bais also expressed confidence that 70 percent of all farmer-beneficiaries would heed their call to boycott the referendum if there would be without any intimidation from the Hacienda Luisita management.
Even if farmers choose land, it would still benefit the Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI), the company that owns the Hacienda, Ambala spokesman Rodel Mesa said.
“If we choose land, we will also pay for it and the payment would go to the Cojuangco family. This is win-win solution for them – not for us,” said Mesa.
On Tuesday, the SC instructed the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to hold another plebiscite among farm-workers, who had received their shares, to determine their choice between stocks or parcels of land.
The same ruling also affirmed the scrapping of the stock distribution option (SDO) first offered by the HLI management. The arrangement would have given farmer-workers the option to acquire shares of stocks instead of actual land ownership in the Hacienda.
The hacienda is owned by the Cojuangcos, the family of President Benigno Aquino’s mother, Corazon.
For his part, HLI spokesman lawyer Tony Ligon contested the call of the two groups.
“We are not a socialist or communist country, where the State can just seize lands and distribute them at its own will,” said the Luisita lawyer.
Ligon admitted that for a farmer to claim a part of the land, he or she should have to pay for at least P1 million per hectare. (AMN/Sunnex)
