Guv: Protect our marine resources
April 29, 2011
IBA, Zambales — Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. has called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local government units (LGUs) to enhance programs on the protection of marine resources in the province.
Ebdane made the call during DENR’s recent turnover of motorboats to different Municipal Governments in the province for its Integrated Coastal Management Program.
The governor underscored the importance of strengthening the protection of marine resources as the best way to boost the fishery sector and the local economy.
So far, 10 motorboats have been turned over to Santa Cruz, Candelaria, Masinloc, Palauig, Botolan, Cabangan, San Felipe, San Antonio, Iba and Subic towns.
Ebdane said the motorboats which came from DENR and released to the LGUs is an important step in protecting the environment and help ensure sustainability of the local marine life.
“Monitoring and law enforcement are critical responses to problems of pollution, degradation and use of harmful fishing methods that put so much stress on the marine environment is crucial in protecting our marine life,” he said.
The Provincial Government has been harnessing its tourism program to its vast shoreline which is at par with other prime tourist spots in the country.
The governor has also pledged its support to the coastal management program undertaken by the DENR and other Municipal Governments.
“I hope we would further strengthen this program until we attain a higher level of cooperation from the community in environmental protection,” he added.
