Guv launches war vs drugs

ANGELES CITY — Governor Lilia Pineda urged barangay officials in Pampanga to wage an all-out war against illegal drugs and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in terms of information about drug pushers.
Pineda issued the statement during a Drug Summit jointly initiated by the Pampanga Provincial Government and the Angeles City Government, in cooperation with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“Dapat po ay wag matakot ang ating mga barangay officials na magbigay ng impormasyon para masugpo natin ang problemang ito sa bawal na gamut (Village officials should cooperate with law enforcement agencies so we can solve the illegal drug problem),” Pineda said.
The governor said majority of the crimes committed are drug-related, citing about 60 percent of cases at the Pampanga Provincial Jail and Angeles City District Jail being related to drugs.
The provincial jail has a capacity of 350 inmates but the present figure already soared to more than 650, the governor said.
“Kung magtutuluy-tuloy po ang problemang ito sa drugs ay baka wala na tayong paglagakan sa mga susunod na makukulong na tao,” Pineda said.
She also lauded the efforts of the PNP to include youth groups in the fight against drugs under its “Kayabe” program.
“Gagawin nating mga asset ang mga kabataan at kasama ng mga barangay officials ay magtatatrabaho rin sila masugpo itong salot sa probinsya (Let us consider the youth as assets who will work with the village officials to eliminate drugs in the province),” Pineda said.
Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, for his part, said that law enforcement alone will not prevent the drug menace.
He stressed the importance of a comprehensive action plan to totally eradicate the problem.
He also solicited the support of the barangay officials to support the effort of the City Government against illegal drugs.
PDEA chief Jose Gutierrez said the agency is closely monitoring possible transshipment points like airports, seaports and others.
In cooperation with local officials, PDEA recently put up a satellite office at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport. The PDEA sub-office will maintain a canine unit for drug detection, according to Gutierrez.
Some Pampanga mayors who attended the summit, including Romulo Pecson of Magalang, Jerry Pelayo of Candaba, Teddy Tumang of Mexico, vowed to support the campaign against illegal drugs.
