Guv eyes probe on fish kill in Pampanga River

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Governor Lilia Pineda on Monday has asked fourth district Provincial Board member Nestor Tolentino investigate the tons of dead fish floating along the Masantol portion of Pampanga River.
The governor personally saw dead fish floating along the Pampanga River while en route to two coastal villages in Masantol town for medical missions last Saturday.
Pineda was visibly alarmed by the “fish kill” and expressed her dismay on the apparent lack of action on the part of the local government unit officials.
Masantol Association of Barangay Captains president Bernie Guevarra said the floating dead fish were killed by “sudsud,” an implement used by the locals in catching them, and were allegedly thrown back into the river by fishermen.
The governor asked Tolentino to conduct as soon as possible a committee hearing with officials of the concerned municipality, fisheries and aquatic Resources bureau, Environment department and other concerned agencies of the government.
Tolentino is the chairman of the Provincial Board’s committee on environment.
