Guv bares plans to federate village peacekeepers

LUBAO — Governor Lilia Pineda on Tuesday bared plans to federate all barangay peacekeepers in all four districts of Pampanga to better address the need to implement peace and order programs of the Philippine National Police.
Pineda announced this Tuesday’s during the launching of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPATs) at the Lubao Gym. The event was attended by more than 1,000 barangay peacekeepers from Lubao, Sasmuan, Sta. Rita and Guagua.

The event is part of the province-wide campaign to create BPATs as deterrents against crime and force multipliers of the local police.
Pampanga police director Edgardo Tinio said that the barangay tanods, including the bantay bayan, civilian volunteer organizations, barangay auxiliaries, non-government organizations and other people’s organizations are being tapped as force multipliers in the fight against insurgency, criminality and terrorism, citing the official statement of the police.
Pineda said she will soon initiate the plan to organize the peacekeepers into federated organizations with each barangay having a leader that would sit in the council of peacekeepers in the town.
“Each district will elect a president which will be provided a vehicle so as to further monitor and administer the various peacekeeper groups in their jurisdictions,” Pineda said, adding that she will also initiate the establishment of offices for barangay tanods near municipal police stations.
Pineda said the move will enable the Provincial Government to mobilize the peacekeepers in times of disasters and various emergency situations aside from their usual roles of maintaining the peace.
Currently, there are around 10,000 barangay peace keepers in Pampanga.
Pineda said that the re-organization will give the Provincial Government the idea on how to effectively support the peacekeeper’s operational needs.
“We will also host recognition of the best performing peacekeepers during the Pampanga Day events,” she said.
In Tuesday’s activity, the peacekeepers were given orientation by the police and the military on how to address criminal elements, respond to crime and take care of crime scenes in preparation for official investigation.
Pineda also distributed new uniforms for the barangay peace keepers.
