Guv asks Kapampangans to pray for Arroyo

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda urged Kapampangans Wednesday to pray for the speedy recovery of Representative Gloria Arroyo (2nd district) “so she can rightfully defend herself against accusations poised against her.”
Speaking before mayors and hundreds of officials during the Water Summit held at Max’s Villa Del Sol, the governor said: “Hinihiling ko sana sa inyo na itang ipagdasal ang ating dating Pangulong GMA. Higit kailanman, ngayon niya kailangan ang ating suporta dahil marami siyang nagawa para sa Pampanga.”
In a separate interview with reporters, Pineda added: “Kailangan niyang magpalakas upang kanyang maharap ang mga akusasyon sa kanya. Kailangan niyang maging matatag upang madepensahan niya ang kanyang sarili. Atin siyang ipagdasal tungo sa kanyang madaling paggaling.”
Pampanga Mayors League president Jerry Pelayo, meanwhile, said the move of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to pursue the travel ban on Arroyo is unfair and defiant of the Supreme Court ruling to let the former President seek medical treatment abroad.
“It is clear defiance of the highest tribunal of the country. Former President Arroyo really medical treatment abroad which is by appointment and is not that easy. Besides, itong si Secretary De Lima ay puro duda lamang. Wala pa naming kaso laban kay GMA,” Pelayo told Sun.Star Pampanga.
He added: “What they should do is file the necessary charges muna at hindi puro paninira sa kanya through media and public opinion. About their worries, one: GMA will face the charges kung mayroon man ma-file. Two: iyung duda nila na hindi na siya babalik, ay mali dahil babalik at babalik si Ginang Arroyo.”
Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, for his part, said the defiance of the DOJ to the SC decision constitutes indirect contempt of Rule 71, which calls for a fine or imprisonment of six months or both.
“The order to implement the decision was received by the DOJ but despite the acceptance, DOJ’s De Lima still issued a directive to the Bureau of Immigration not to allow PGMA to leave. It smacks of defiance of the last bulwark of democracy and is indirect contempt. Obey before you complain. This soldier’s dictum should be followed by all Filipinos regardless of your station in life,” Pamintuan said.
Pelayo led Wednesday Pampanga mayors, together with Pineda, in an afternoon trip to visit and manifest support for the former President. (Jovi T. De Leon)
