Guagua coop council is most active coop in Pampanga

THE Municipal Cooperative Development Council (MCDC) of Guagua won this year’s Most Active MCDC of Pampanga during the recent awarding ceremony at the Benigno Aquino Hall, Capitol grounds.
Councilor Anthony Torres, chairman of the Guagua-MCDC, thanked Governor Lilia Pineda and Provincial Board members for the awards, saying the cooperatives in his hometown have been very active in providing services and various programs to the people.
Torres cited St. James the Apostle Multi-Purpose Cooperative and the Guagua Businessmen and Professionals Multi-Purpose Cooperative as two leading multi-purpose cooperatives that have been awarded by the Provincial Government recently.
He said the two cooperatives were awarded because of their strong response to the socio-economic needs of the people in the second district of the province through efficient and expanded programs and services.
Torres added the Guagua Businessmen and Professionals MPC and the St. James the Apostle MPC were cited as among the top five business groups in the province.
Meanwhile, Aidan Hortilano, chairman of St. James, said the multi-purpose cooperative was organized pursuant to the Parish Pastoral Plan of St. James Parish.
Hortilano said with 20 incorporators and paid-up capital of P6,000, the cooperative was registered with the Cooperative Development Authority on January 12, 2004 under the name of St. James the Apostle Micro-Finance Credit Cooperative.
He said as the cooperative expanded in membership and capital, it also expanded its services, embarking into buying and selling of rice and mangoes, marketing of members produce (furniture and chicharon), providing consultancy services and raising its ceiling on loans as well as granting financial assistance to feasible entrepreneurial ventures such as cottage industries and livelihood programs as well as providing fringe and mutual aid benefits to its deceased members’ beneficiaries, thereby fulfilling its vision/mission of individual and community services and development.
“As of October 2011, the St. James the Apostle (Betis) Multi-Purpose Cooperative membership has remarkably grown to 4,155 with a networth of P50 million. To address and sustain the growing demands of its members of quality service, the Cooperative linked with the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) and appointed SJAMPC as an Anchor-Coop Partner in Pampanga. Through this partnership, the provisions for the appointed Anchor-Coop are: provide additional Extend Capacity Training, technical and financial assistance, facilitate connections to other donors, and provide partners with Publications, Training and Reading materials. SJAMPC opened its first satellite office in Bulaon in the City of San Fernando to service its members there thus, providing financial and non-financial services at their doorstep,” Hortilano said.
“In our journey in life, we are about to leave a legacy with the people around us. SJAMPC also envisions to leave a legacy in our community through the advocates for a change in mindset and attitude, encouraging and promoting self-employment as an engine for economic growth and poverty alleviation that result to improve the quality of life of its members,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chito Araullo, chairman of the Guagua Businessmen and Professionals Multi-Purpose Cooperative, said the coop is an organization of small businessmen and professionals based in Guagua, who have bound together for the common goal of improving their businesses and trade.
Araullo said the group has a share capital, which they lend to their members in order to infuse funds for their small business.
“Naitatag ang kooperatiba noong taong 2000 sa pangalang Guagua Stall Owners MPC na naging Guagua Businessmen and Professionals Multi–Purpose Cooperative dahil sa paglawak ng nasasaklaw na miyembro,” Araullo said.
He said that all the coop’s 195 members are from Guagua, while they also have 62 associate members.
Araullo also said that as of press time, the GBPMPC has total assets of P41,747, 577.46; total liabilities of P16,964,877.60 and paid up capital of P 20,187,875.33. (Chris Navarro)
