Groups plant mangrove trees at Pampanga Bay
MASANTOL — Filipino and Japanese non-government organizations planted over the weekend 1,000 nipa saplings along the Pampanga Bay portion of this town in a bid to save the mangrove population and promote awareness on mangrove forests.
Spearheading the event were the Rotary Club of Central Pampanga (RCCP), Mirai Ni Kibou Foundation, Rotary Club of Ashikaga East Japan and Quota International of Pampanga.
Manned also by volunteers from the Rotaract Clubs of RCCP and Ashikaga, the group led the planting of the 1,000 nipa saplings along the Masantol coastline after making a brief stop at the Tarik Soliman High School.
Mirai Ni Kibou Foundation president Joseph Ang said the groups decided to plant nipa as a source of income for the local communities living around and near the mangrove forests.
He said nipa is a good source for bamboo house roofing and can yield materials for products like wine and vinegar.
“We hope to contribute to the livelihood of the people here and at the same time promote the importance of these mangrove forests not just to their livelihood but also to their community and the environment,” Ang said.
Mangrove forests serve as breeding grounds for marine life and also help in the balance of marine ecosystems and protection of coastline from erosion.
Ang said they will return in the coming years to ensure that the whole Masantol coastline is planted with mangrove trees.
