Group raises cash to ‘pay back’ vehicles received by bishops

A RELIGIOUS group has started to raise cash to “pay back” government vehicle donations received by some members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
The Coalition for Family and Life, led by former Environment secretary and ex-Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, has asked the public to donate money to bishops so that the group can raise P8.258 million.
The figure is the estimated amount of the vehicles received by seven bishops from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) during the Arroyo administration.
“Sa ating paraan, maliit o malaki, ay magbigay tayo ng tulong maresolba lang itong isyung ito. Kung ang issue ay ang salapi, e di isoli na lang natin (sa PCSO). Ang mga lay leaders, alam ko, maraming gustong tumulong dito,” said Atienza.
Bishops and Church leaders have nothing to do with the effort, Atienza said during a weekly Church forum on Tuesday.
The group will also begin coordinating with other Church-based organizations nationwide to raise the amount “as soon as possible”.
It also said that the bishops did not violate any law or ethical principles in connection with the financial donations they have received from the PCSO.
“The accusations against them are all fabricated, baseless and politically-motivated to destroy the image and dignity of our Mother Church, our priest, and our bishops,” said the manifesto.
“Thus, we make a firm stand in their defense knowing fully-well that these funds or donations were not used by our beloved Bishops for their own personal benefit but to collaborate with the government in extending help and assistance to our less fortunate brothers and sisters in areas, which could no longer be attended to by the government,” the bishops added in the manifesto.
Within the hour after the fund raising was launched, some P124,250 were collected from those who attended the activity.
Ed Capulong of the coalition led the donors by giving a P100,000 check followed by Atienza and lawyer Romulo Macalintal, with P1,000 bills each.
Should the bishops decide to return the sports utility vehicles (SUVs) they received from PCSO, Atienza said the group will just use the money to buy them their own vehicles.
“Kung sabihin nila na kotse ang kunin namin. Ito ang pera pambili ng kotse para sa Obispo,” said Atienza.
Atienza, a close friend of pro-life advocate Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao, said he will not pressure the boxing superstar to donate money.
“Ayaw naming malalaki (tao) ang hingan. Mas maganda ang karaniwang tao ay magbigay ng P10 and P20 na nanggaling sa puso niya at galing sa kanyang pagnanais na pagkakaisa that will further strengthen the Church,” he said. (AMN/Sunnex)
