Group holds environment forum

ANGELES CITY — Green Youth Brigade, in cooperation with the Sigma Kappa Pi (Ekit) Fraternity Alumni Pampanga chapter, held last April 29 an environment forum themed “Climate in Crisis: What is the next step?” at the Coffee Academy in Balibago here last April 29.
Cecile Yumul, a member of the Save the Trees Coalition, talked about the importance of trees to the environment.
She said the cutting of trees contributes to the global climate change, which destroys the environment.
“Today, we no longer hear the migratory birds sing and the cogon grass flowers bloom,” said Yumul.
Former councilor Louie Reyes, a leader of the Green Youth Brigade, said the tsunami that hit Japan last March is an eye-opener to all Asian countries, particularly those lying on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.
Reyes said despite being the most advanced and most developed country in Asia, Japan is prone and vulnerable to calamities and disasters.
“In the Philippines, we experienced the 2009 September Peping and Ondoy typhoons. It has brought damage both to properties and human lives. Luckily, we do not have nuclear power plants in the country,” he said.
“But it does not mean we are safer. We have to do something. There is a growing concern on the issue of global warming and climate change. People are becoming aware of the importance of the environment,” he added. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
