Green group supports ‘Meatless Mondays’
ANGELES CITY — An environmentalist group has vowed to support the “Meatless Mondays” campaign in the country by promoting tofu sisig, which it claims is as good as the real pork sisig.
In fact, a tofu sisig cooking event was held at the Verman Car Park along Miranda Street here last Monday, according to former Councilor Louie Reyes who heads the Green Youth Brigade.
The “veggie sisig” cooking, he said, was their way of contributing to the efforts of Dr. Custer Deocaris, a molecular biologist who now chairs the Luntiang Lunes (literally, Green Monday) movement, which launched the “Meatless Mondays” campaign in the Philippines.
“We have tapped vegetarian cook Paul Dizon whose tofu sisig is as delicious as the pork sisig,” Reyes said.
Since the original pork sisig was conceptualized at the crossing in Angeles City, it has evolved into many varieties like sisig bangus and sisig manok, according to Reyes.
“We are excited about the tofu sisig since this is the second time Green Youth Brigade has featured food in its activities,” Reyes said.
“It looks very promising since our audience really enjoyed the tofu sisig. They were really surprised that it tastes like the real classic and original pork sisig. It has big market potential for health conscious people,” he added.
Congressman Teddy Casiño filed House Bill 6311 which seeks to require both private and public schools to provide meatless lunches every Monday for their students.
The Green Youth Brigade responded to Deocaris’s call to join the campaign, Reyes said.
The Green Youth Brigade is a network of youth-based, non-government organizations and environmental advocates.
It is also working on issues that promote a healthy environment and sustainable development.
With the help of media and social networking, the Green Youth Brigade will continue to promote tofu sisig especially to Kapampangans who are known for their cooking and love of food, Reyes said.
