Green group saves century-old tree

ANGELES CITY — A group of environmentalists has prevented the cutting of a century-old Gita tree at a vacant lot near the Immaculate Conception Parish Church in Barangay Balibago here.
Cecile Santos Yumul, of the Save the Trees Coalition, said they were able to stop workers from cutting the tree with the help of the local police and foresters from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
According to Yumul, the owners of the property violated Presidential Decrees 705 (Forestry Reform Code of the Philippines) and 953 requiring the planting of trees in certain places and penalizing unauthorized cutting, destruction, damaging, and injuring of certain trees, plants and vegetation.
Gita trees are considered holy and they were brought into the country by Indian traders during the old times, according to Yumul.
Yumul said she was informed by broadcaster Boy Santiago of RW 95.1 FM radio station Wednesday morning that a group of men was cutting a full-grown tree along the MacArthur Highway here.
She immediately proceeded to the place and confirmed the veracity of the report.
“I immediately called and sought the help of Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan and DENR Pampanga office led by Florencio Jimenez Lalu,” Yumul said.
Pamintuan sent a team of policemen headed by Chief Inspector Luisito M. Tan and conducted an investigation on the incident.
Lalu discovered that the DENR Central Office in Manila granted on Holy Wednesday a certain Winnie Adorador permit to cut the tree.
But workers started cutting the tree on Easter Sunday, according to Yumul, who said she filed a formal complaint against Adorador.
Adorador should have posted signage informing the public about the tree cutting, Yumul said. The cutting must be done in the presence of DENR foresters, she added.
“No such signage was put up neither there were DENR foresters present,” Yumul said in her complaint affidavit.
A 50-year-old tree has an estimated value of P9.5 million and the amount of the Gita tree may reach more than P20 million, Yumul said.
