‘Green architecture’ pushed
April 27, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A renowned architect and fellow of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) recently called on builders, contractors and local government officials to consider “green architecture” as part of their development initiatives.
During the Holcim Philippines-sponsored forum of the UAP-Sinukwan chapter at Max’s Restaurant in Villa Del Sol over the weekend, Architect Miguel Guerrero described the concept of “green architecture” as being environment-friendly in various industries, from information technology, manufacturing, real estate development and even government.”
“It is a matter of sustainability and blending together natural elements with technology. At first, it would look expensive but in the end, it will prove that green architecture is cheaper, safer and more sustainable than conventional designs,” said Guerrero, who is a founding member of the Green Architecture Advocacy Philippines that promotes green architecture to all sectors of society.
He told Sun.Star Pampanga that since green architecture is now being adopted by institutional builders and residential developers, local government units must consider the concept in their development works.
“In the Philippines, local government units or LGUs should be the first to understand what it takes to implement green initiatives, and have to be motivated by ensuring that their offices can handle disaster management, apart from just implementing green building initiatives,” he said.
Guerrero added that local governments must also be responsible in acquiring topographical and geological information of the land they manage.
“This set of information will be basis for urban planning, assigning the areas that are good for commercial and residential development, as well as knowing the possible effects of natural occurrences on property and on the population. There should be a concerted effort to share information among agencies so that they could know how to manage their localities,” he said.
He, however, noted that “the reality is there is no large-scale, concerted effort to becoming environment-friendly especially among local government units where LGU administrators barely grasp the concept.”
As for the private sector, Guerrero said the construction, real estate, and architectural industries are already pushing forward the goals of getting the government to implement directives that would ensure continued implementation of green building technologies.
