Government spends P120,000 for Arroyo hospitalization
MANILA — A medical report Monday showed the government already spending more than P120,000 for former President Gloria Arroyo since she was detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City.
Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 112 spokesperson Felda Domingo said the VMMC and Arroyo’s attending physician were able to submit the medical report as well as the expenses incurred in her stay at the presidential suite of the VMMC beating Tuesday’s deadline imposed by Judge Jesus Mupas.
The latest medical report, which was signed by Dr. Rafaelita Javier, head of the VMMC’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, said that as to the expenses, the figure stood at P126,661,21 mostly from electrical consumption (P65,635.43) and P52.547 for medical procedures.
The medical report also showed that the 65-year-old Pampanga representative is still suffering from cervical spondylosis and spinal stenosis. She also complains of pains in the neck, back and thigh.
The report recommended “continued intensive physical therapy” for the former President from Monday to Friday, to ease the pain in her neck, back and thigh.
Mupas originally ordered Arroyo’s camp to submit such report on February 9 but they failed to do so, forcing the Commission on Elections (Comelec) last March 20 to file a motion asking the court to seek an explanation from her.
Prosecution lawyer Ma. Juana Valeza said they needed the medical report as it will help determine their basis for asking the court whether to keep the lawmaker at the VMMC or move her to a regular jail facility.
The prosecution said Arroyo’s latest condition was a major improvement considering that when she was brought to the VMMC last December after being confined at the St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) in Taguig City, she was diagnosed with infectious colitis, hypocalcemia, hypoparathyroidism and vitamin D deficiency.
Arroyo’s counsel, Ray Montri Santos, however, clarified that despite some improvements to her health, she is still unfit to be discharged from the VMMC, more so transferred to a regular detention facility.
Arroyo is facing electoral sabotage charges before Mupas sala in connection with alleged irregularities in the 2007 senatorial election.
She pleaded not guilty to the charges during her arraignment last February 23.
Arroyo’s co-accused former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. and former election supervisor Lintang Bedol have also entered not guilty pleas during their respective arraignment.
Electoral sabotage is a non-bailable offense and carries a life imprisonment term.
All of the accused had argued they should be allowed to post bail since the government’s witness against them is weak. (AH/Sunnex)
