Government defends tax raps vs Arroyos

MALACAÑANG on Wednesday maintained that the move of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to file cases against members of the Arroyo family is not a “vendetta”.
“There is no campaign especially against the family of the former President (now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo),” Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing.
Camarines Sur Representative Dato Macapagal-Arroyo, youngest son of former President, earlier criticized the apparent harassment of the BIR against his family, including his brother Mikey Arroyo.
The revenue office is scrutinizing Dato’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) following the tax evasion charges filed against Mikey and wife Angela last month.
Dato said this is part of the administration’s “witch-hunt” against his family, but Malacañang insisted otherwise.
Spokesman Lacierda said the BIR requested copies of the SALN of various congressmen and not just the two Arroyos.
“There is no specific target in mind by the BIR — it depends on the evidence as collated by them,” he said.
He added that Malacañang does not dictate upon the BIR on who to persecute.
“We don’t target people before we investigate. We look at the evidence and we see the trail of evidence and if there’s evidence necessary to indict a person then Commissioner Kim Henares will do so,” he further said. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
