Fun run for Rizal’s birth anniversary targets 150,000 participants

IN A fitting tribute to Dr. Jose Rizal, the Department of Education (DepEd) said it will gather at least 150,000 participants from all walks of life in a fun run on June 19 to mark the national hero’s 150th birth anniversary.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro said aside from marking Rizal’s birth anniversary, the fun run is also meant to rally public support for basic education in the country, especially at a time when the Aquino administration is in the midst of implementing reform programs, as well as policy changes in education such as the K-12 program.
The department is under criticism due to reports of overcrowding and lack of school facilities when classes formally opened last week after the two-month long summer break.
Luistro said everyone can participate in the nationwide fun run, which will start at 6 a.m. on June 19. In Metro Manila, participants will assemble at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta.
Participants may choose to enlist for the 1-kilometer (km), 2-km or 3-km run-walks event.
The DepEd said that like the fun run they held last February during the 25th Edsa People Power I anniversary celebration, the registration fee is waived for runners who would join the event.
“However, those who would join may instead give donation either for students or schools that included notebooks, crayons, chalks, or school furniture, equipment such as computers, printers, fax machines, electric fans, or home economics or industrial arts tools,” the DepEd chief said.
Likewise, Luistro said participants may also pledge for service, such as helping build classrooms or volunteer their time to serve as tutors, resource persons, teachers’ assistants or maintenance staff.
The department through its Adopt-A-School Program (ASP) will set up a booth for the acceptance of donations and to administer the pledge form. This will be replicated in all the regional and division offices nationwide.
But the official stressed that though they expect teachers and students to participate, they are not required nor should be forced to join the event.
He added that teachers should not use the student’s participation as a incentive for additional grade or as a pre-requisite for a subject.
Merlie Asprer, ASP Operations Manager, said they have also recieved confirmation of participation to the fun run from the private sector.
“Employees of a telecommunications company, for one, have agreed to pool resources and buy educational materials which they will bring on June 19,” Asprer said. (AH/Sunnex)
