For Kapampangan families, ‘Undas’ also means ‘reunion’

MABALACAT — “It’s like Christmas Day.”
This is how Lourdes Capil, 74, described her yearly visit to the El Retiro Memorial Park in Barangay Dau.
“It’s one of the holidays when my 10 children along with their wives and children come to light candles and lay flowers for their dead father,” Capil said.
Capil said she does not usually see her children talk and share light moments since they got married and lived separately.
“Seeing my grandchildren also makes me feel happy although they’re naughty and playful,” Capil said.
Cris Velasco, 57, has always been looking forward to All Saints’ Day since his father-in-law died in 2006.
“When it’s All Saints’ Day, the whole family gathers around my father-in-law’s grave. We pray together and light candles for his soul. We stay the whole day at the cemetery,” Velasco said.
Velasco said All Saints’ Day has become their family’s reunion day.
Sheila Ayson, a call center agent based in Manila, went home to Pampanga on Friday.
“During holidays, travel time from Manila to Pampanga becomes longer than the usual. But I don’t mind as long as I get home and see my parents and relatives on All Saints’ Day,” Ayson said.
More than family bonding, Capil and Velasco said All Saints’ Day gives them the opportunity to tell their children and grandchildren to keep the Kapampangan tradition of remembering dead relatives by lighting candles for their souls.
