Food chain builds classroom for Angeleño kids
April 27, 2011
ANGELES CITY — A giant food corporation has chosen a public school in this city to be among the 40 recipients of its classroom building program across the country.
Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) led the groundbreaking ceremonies on Tuesday at the Pulung Bulu Elementary School (PBES) here, where the classroom will be built.
Arline Adeva, public relations senior manager of the JFC, said PBES is the first recipient of the food chain’s Build-A-Classroom Project in the province.
“We chose this school based on the Department of Education’s priority list and because this school has been our partner in our feeding programs in the past,” Adeva said.
Under the Build-A-Classroom Program, Adeva said, the JFC will build 40 classrooms across the country.
She said the classroom program is also an offshoot of the Maaga Ang Pasko project of the company since proceeds from it were used in building the classrooms.
At least 400,000 Jollibee and Friends dolls were sold in 2010, raising a total of P12 million.
The Jollibee Franchises Association and the Jollibee Foundation donated an additional P8 million.
The company targets to complete at least nine of these classrooms within the year.
“This classroom at Pulung Bulu is expected to be completed this June so they can use it at the start of the new academic year,” Adeva said.
Zenaida Quiambao, officer-in-charge at the PBES, thanked the JFC for granting them a new classroom.
Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting said the JFC’s project is a manifestation of the private-public partnership program of the Aquino administration.
“This partnership is very important because it supports the government in addressing the shortage of the facilities and infrastructures in public schools. This is a big help because with additional classrooms follows additional number of students and the improvement of their performance,” Cabigting said.
The new classroom, Cabigting said, is a big help because it will address the lack of classrooms, which is a usual problem of schools around the country.
Reynaldo Laguda, assistant secretary at the Department of Education, added the JFC was among the first private companies to heed to the government’s call in addressing infrastructure gaps in public education.
“Through their efforts, Jollibee proved their commitment not just to the Filipino children, but to nation building, as well,” Laguda said.
