Flooding hits six Davao villages anew

July 5, 2011
DAVAO CITY — Continuous rains on Sunday evening triggered floods in six villages in the city, disaster officials said. No casualty reported.
Five villages in the city are in a state of calamity after flooding brought by torrential rain hit the city on June 28, killing 30 persons and displacing over 14,000 families.
Three-months-old Mark Louie Falomar of Matina Crossing has remained missing, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported.
Damages in last week’s flood is pegged at P11 million.
Alleli Homquilada, Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DCDCC) radio operator, on Monday said rainwater inundated six villages, namely: Matina Crossing, Matina Aplaya, Matina Pangi, Talomo Proper, Maa and Lasang. The five villages, except Lasang, are placed in state of calamity by the City Government.
In Lasang, affected areas were Purok Scorpio, Pieces, Libra, Aquarius and Virgo after the Licanan River overflowed.
The overflowing of the river also affected some areas in Paquibato, Talaingod, Carmen and Panabo City.
“Sa pagkakaron, wala pa namo nakuha kung pila ka pamilya ang naapektuhan sa baha kay on going pa ang among validation sa area (We are still validating the total number of affected families),” Homquilada said.
Renante Luna, officer-in-charge of Barangay Matina Crossing Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, told Sun.Star SuperBalita Davao that residents from the Arroyo Compound at Matina Crossing, Guadalupe Village, and Matina Balusong also fled their homes after the Pangi River overflowed.
“Nagbaha na sab kagabii mao nga daling mibakwet ang mga tawo. Ang uban sa mga residente sa Arroyo Compound, na-trap sila mao nga amo na sab silang gi-rescue (We were again flooded. Residents in affected areas already fled their homes. Some residents of Arroyo Compound were trapped, but were already rescued),” Luna said.
The City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) has conducted relief operations in the affected communities.
Two schools in Davao City have decided to suspend classes Monday following Sunday night’s flooding.
The affected schools are Governor Vicente Duterte National High School and Soledad Dolor Elementary School in Bangkal, said Eva Antipuesto, Department of Education (DepEd)-Davao Region administrative officer.
Other schools affected by the flood are Sped Bangkal elementary and secondary schools, Matina Central Elementary School, Don Manuel Gutierrez, Mabini National High School, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School, Maa Escoda Elementary School, Matina Pangi Elementary School, Mabini Elementary School, Bayanihan Elementary School, and Diego Silang Elementary School.
One high school in Bangkal is now in dire need of textbooks as the books, which were supposed to be given to students last week, were drenched in flood. Some of the textbooks are still usable once sun dried but others have been destroyed by flood.
Meanwhile, housing developers have been urged to assist families affected by floods to rebuild their houses.
Carlos Vargas, chair of Project Happy Home, on Monday said his group will ask real estate developers in the city to extend help to victims of the flooding that hit southern part of the Davao City on June 28.
There are 26 real estate companies engaged in property development in the city. With this figure, Vargas is hopeful to generate significant support in any form, especially in rebuilding houses of displaced families.
The fun run, dubbed as “Race to rebuild”, is set on July 30 to gather funds to buy basic construction material, such as plywood, cement, and tin, among others.
