Fishermen wish ‘more water for more fish’

CANDABA — Several fishermen here are hopeful that Tropical Storm “Juaning” could bring enough water to rivers, idle lands and other bodies of water in their area to support their dying livelihood.
They don’t consider typhoons like Juaning as disasters, but a source of hope for their families, adding that these typhoons bring water, which is vital in the fishing industry.
“Kapag walang ulan tuyo ang sapa. Gutom ito, parang aming mga pamilya kasi wala na kaming isdang mahuhuli para ibenta sa palengke (Rivers are dry when there’s no rain. It suffers hunger, like our families because we have nothing to sell in markets),” Herman Manalastas, a fisherman said.
Manalastas said they wake up as early as 3 a.m. to catch fish in the river, but they go home with their nets empty most of the time.
“In the past, you didn’t need to be a fisherman to get fish. There was sufficient fish for all the families,” he said.
“Ngayon pati mangingisda walang nang mahuli. Kaya, kapag bumabaha tuwang tuwang kami kasi ibig sabihin, dadami ang mahuhuling isda. Sana ngayon sa bagyong ‘Juaning’ sapat na tubig lang ang panalangin namin, (Now, even fishermen have nothing to catch. So, we are happy when it’s raining because that means we can catch enough fish. We hope that with Tropical Storm Juaning, rivers will have enough water),” he added.
Tropical Storm “Juaning” as of 5 p.m. Wednesday has slightly weakened Wednesday as it made landfall over Aurora province. It has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph.
