Firemen accused of stealing from stores during Leon Kilat blaze

ITY Fire Marshall Anderson Comar challenged business proprietors who reportedly accused them of stealing valuables from their burning stalls during a fire last Thursday night to name the culprits and file a case.
“Ipatudlo nako nila kung kinsa para atong ning klaruhon. Kung dili gani, ako ang mo-file nila (Let them pinpoint who stole from their stores so this will be cleared. If not, I will be the one to file a case against them),” he said.
Comar said he issued a memorandum for an investigation on the case, since the accusations can tarnish the fire department’s image.
“Maningkamot gani mi og pawong sa kayo, unya pasanginlan na hinuon mi (We tried our best to fight the fire and this is what we get),” he said.
Although it was the right of the business proprietors to complain, Comar said they shouldn’t generalize because there were other people during the incident.
During their operation, Comar said volunteers, local officials and onlookers were in the scene.
“Pero basin wa ta kahibaw, losing establishment na diay. Basin mao na lang ni ilang alibi (Who knows, maybe they are losing in their business and want to use the incident as an excuse),” he said.
He said there were 25 fire trucks that responded to the fire alarm that razed a two-storey building that housed Wilkris Appliance Corp., CircuitSmart Appliance Center and Sugano Furniture Display Center on Leon Kilat St.
Carlito Foodhaus and some classrooms of the University of Cebu Main Campus were damaged.
Fire officials estimated damage to properties at P750,000.
An electric post that sparked near the commercial building was believed to be the cause of the fire, which was declared under control after 15 minutes.
Nobody was injured in the fire that was raised to Task Force Alpha.
Manuel Quiblat Jr, branch manager of Wilkris Appliance Corp., said the money in their vault was gone.
Quiblat, who was not around during the fire, said an estimated P11,000 was lost, including several checks inside the vault.
“We are still investigating it,” Quiblat said.
Comar said the vault can’t be easily opened since it needs a pass code.
“Ang kahibaw ra ang maka-abli ana. Sila ra gyud (Only the person who knows the pass code can open the vault),” he said.
Meanwhile, Comar said he sent an emergency request to Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to purchase additional rescue tools and equipment for the department.
Comar said the additional fire trucks they asked from the city government was already opened for bidding.
“I will follow-up it soon because this will be really a big help in our operation,” he said.
He also urged the Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) to inspect electrical connections.
“We have no hold over it. Sila ra. Mura naman gani na og spaghetti tungod sa kadaghang connections (Some of the tangled connections resemble spaghetti),” he said.
The fire that struck Leon Kilat St. was the ninth fire that occurred in Cebu in six days.
Leaks in liquefied petroleum gas tanks, faulty electricity connections and overheated appliances were blamed for the fires.
