Firecracker accidents up by 80% in Central Luzon

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Police Regional Office (PRO) in Central Luzon has reported some 211 cases of firecracker-related accidents from December 2010 to January of this year.
The number registered an almost-80 percent increase from 115 reported cases in 2009.
Most of the victims were injured by piccolo, pla-pla, Goodbye Philippines, Five Star, and watusi. Most of these are being banned by the health department and the Philippine National Police.
Initial reports from the PRO revealed that Pampanga has the most number of firecracker-related incidents with 69 reported injuries, followed by Bulacan with 51 cases and Tarlac with 31.
There were also reported cases in Nueva Ecija (30), Angeles City (14), Bataan (12), Zambales (3) and Olongapo City (1).
The PRO also said that Leonardo Reyes, 54, of Sitio Bangag, Barangay General Lim in Orion, Bataan, and Imelda Cayanan, 75, of Barangay Sta. Monica in Masantol, Pampanga, have been hit by stray bullets.
Police investigators are still looking into the details of the said incidents.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday said that firecracker accidents in Central Luzon have been higher by only 19 percent from the region’s five-year average.
Reports from the DOH said the findings were based on the number of accidents from 2005 to 2009, with a total of 31 injuries due to fireworks recorded in the region as of December 31.
In 2010, DOH Surveillance Reports noted that some 59 accidents were reported from major hospitals in Central Luzon. About 17 firecracker accidents were recorded in Pampanga alone, but with no casualties.
The figure is significantly lower than in 2008 and is still considered to be one of the most peaceful celebrations of the New Year, according to the DOH.
In 2008, more than 160 people were injured in firecracker-related incidents during the New Year’s Eve in Pampanga alone.
Dr. Irene Canlas, officer-in-charge of the DOH-Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (Resu), said that in 2007, her office has recorded 375 cases of firecracker-related injuries throughout Central Luzon. Of this number, various medical institutions in Pampanga reported 43 victims.
Officials in the city said the number of firecracker-related injuries may still go up, as the DOH will continue its monitoring until January 5 this year.
