Fire razes Fil-Chinese factory in Bataan

MARIVELES, Bataan — Fire razed a factory producing Sando bags for exports inside the Area of Freeport Authority of Bataan (AFAB) in this town Wednesday afternoon, leaving an estimated damage of more than P100 million.
Rolando Uy, Filpak Industries plant manager, said he was told that the fire in their factory might have been caused by baby rockets or “kuwitis” that exploded in their printing section, which contained highly-flammable chemicals.
“Somebody told me that there were baby rockets exploding before the fire incident took place,” Uy said.
He said there was no one inside the factory because workers were supposed to return next Monday yet.
Uy estimated the damage on their firm at more than P100 million. He said their machines alone used in producing sando bags for export to the United States cost more than P1 million each.
The Filipino-Chinese firm has been with the Bataan Economic Zone, recently turned into the AFAB, since 1978.
Senior Fire Officer 1 Romeo Abergas, fire marshal of Mariveles, said that when they arrived in the area, the fire was already big and raging.
Seven fire trucks from Mariveles, BEZ, Limay and Balanga responded, placing the fire under control after three hours.
According to Abergas, one was hurt in the incident.
