Farmers’ congress tackles woes, programs
May 25, 2011
STA. ANA — The 2nd Farmers’ Congress organized by Mayor Rommel Concepcion and Representative Aurelio Gonzales tackled various ways of improving farm yield and reducing problems faced by farmers.
The gathering, which was attended by 400 farmers and their families at the Barangay Santiago Covered Court here, discussed the challenges faced by farmers, particularly in improving rice harvest.
Lito Marin, 69, said he finds it more and more difficult to cultivate his one-hectare land due to high costs in farm inputs. He said they also fall victim to traders who buy their produce at a very low price.
“We need more facilities and programs to help us benefit more from our produce,” Marin said, adding he is thankful for the commitment of the Municipal Government of Sta. Ana through Concepcion and the support extended by Gonzales.
Concepcion, for his part, said his administration has been addressing the problems faced by farmers here though effective program developments and seminars.
He said a development program is underway to help farmers earn more from their products.
Meanwhile, Gonzales said he had commissioned the earlier construction of farm-to-market roads that connect Western Sta. Ana with Mexico, as well as the construction of dikes and irrigation canals here.
“We have initially done a lot to protect farms here from flooding through the construction of canals and make delivery of goods faster through our farm-to-market roads. However, I do know that there are still a lot of things that needs to be done in Sta. Ana. I give my full commitment to extend more development projects here,” Gonzales said, adding that roads and irrigation projects are just of few of the planned developments within this year.
During the event, Concepcion also facilitated the raffle of farm implements to the farmers who attended the event.
Gonzales also financed the acquisition of mountain bikes that were given to the farmers.
