‘Falcon’ damage estimated at P54-M
June 27,2011
MANILA — Tropical Storm “Falcon” (international name: Meari), which dumped heavy rains and caused massive flooding last week, has caused P54 million damage to property, a disaster agency said Sunday.
In its 8 p.m. report Sunday, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) estimated the cost of damages to agriculture and infrastructure in Central Luzon, Mimaropa and Bicol Region at P54,486,592.90.
amage to infrastructure was pegged at P30.86 million, while agriculture damaged reached P23.62 million, the report said.
Falcon also left one person dead, 18 missing, three wounded, and displaced over 800,000 individuals due to flashfloods.
The NDRRMC report identified the lone fatality as Ranny Bernardo of Hagonoy, Bulacan, who died due to drowning.
Of the 18 missing, one is from Albay, nine fishermen from Catanduanes, and three others from Camarines Norte. Three people were also reported missing in Bulacan, Olongapo City and Bataan. Mountain Province and Rizal provinces also reported one missing person each.
The NDRRMC reported that the three wounded were all minors namely: Lily Rose Cesista, 14 (from Quezon City); Rizaldo Jacalan, 5 (Valenzuela City); Jobelle Ivan Tabungar, 5 (Valenzuela City).
The NDRRMC said a total of 173,594 families or 823,884 persons have been affected by flooding. Of the number 23,970 families or 111,820 persons remain in 181 evacuation centers.
Falcon’s wrath was felt in 587 barangays of 59 municipalities and 21 cities in four regions, the report said.
The NDRRMC has extended P7,181,179.40 worth of assistance to victims of Tropical Storm Falcon.
Some roads in northern Luzon and central have remained impassable either due to slides or due to flooding. These include the Baguio-Bontoc Road (Topdac Section) and Abra-Kalinga Road (Km 470), among others.
Flooding was also noted Sunday in the major thoroughfares of San Fernando City in Pampanga, a day after Falcon has left the country’s area of responsibility.
The NDRRMC report said clearing operations are underway to make these roads open to traffic as soon as possible despite warning from state weather forecasters that rains will still prevail over the next few days due to southwest monsoon.
In a related development, the Philippine Airlines (PAL) said it will airlift relief goods for Cotabato flood victims on its regular flights from Manila to Cotabato, Davao and General Santos.
In a statement, the airline said it has been coordinating with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that want to send relief goods to Cotabato, which has been reeling from the effects of the recent floods.
Recipients of the shipment should preferably be the sender’s counterpart or reputable non-government organizations, civic or religious groups from Mindanao.
So far, three private foundations have advised PAL on their planned shipment of relief donations.
An Airbus 319 aircraft, which flies once a day to Cotabato will be primarily used for the delivery of relief goods, while the remaining will be loaded on the flights to Davao and General Santos.
PAL deploys its wide-body aircraft–B747s and A340s–on the flights to Davao and General Santos.
The airline clarified that it is only providing free airlift, thus the consignee or recipient of the goods should handle land transport from Davao and General Santos to Cotabato.
To maximize cargo space, PAL advised shippers to refrain from sending items that are available or may easily be purchased in or near Cotabato (such as noodles, bottled water, rice, etc.), perishable food and hazardous or bulky items like LPG containers.
