Exports of Chilean wines are growing because of – or thanks to – the economic crisis. The marketing positioning of Chilean wines at the entry level, is supported by a favorable currency rate, as opposed to the exchange rate of the euro, especially to the United States and Great Britain, which represents a decisive advantage. In November 2009, exports of Chilean wine bottles increased by 24.7% in volume and 25.6% in value.
The figures are more moderate, and especially less homogeneous between volume and value, if one looks at the performance of Chilean wine exports during the first eleven months of 2009: +15.1% in volume and -0.9 % in value over the same period in 2008, according to the Association of Wines of Chile.
We understand, and the professional body confirms, that much of the increase in volume (6.27 million hectoliters in total) is primarily due to growth in sales of bulk wine, which rose 33.7%. In November, as the holidays approached and a demand for more expensive wines emerged. “November has shown strong growth in export volumes of wine in bottle and the average price continues to grow”, said Vice-President of the association, Rene Araneda.
Sales of bottled wines dropped by 3.1% on the first eleven months of 2009, while volume increased 5.5 percent to 39.4 million cases ; during the month of November, shipping rose 24.7% in volume and 25.6% in value, reaching 4.3 million cases and $ 117 million. While sales of bulk wine grew on their side of 141.1% in volume and 80.6% in value in November alone, reaching 32 million liters and 19 million dollars. Of the first eleven months of 2009, growth remains positive: 33.7% in volume and +13.7% in value, per cent respectively), to 2.43 million hl and 154 million dollars.
