Ex-Lacson aide detained after returning to the Philippines

FORMER police superintendent Michael Ray Aquino, one of the accused in the infamous Dacer-Corbito double murder case, has cleared his ex-boss Senator Panfilo Lacson, and former President Joseph Estrada from the grisly killings upon his return to the Philippines.
“I’d like to tell the Filipino people that I haven’t received any order from President Joseph Estrada or Senator Panfilo Lacson to kidnap, harm and/or murder anyone specifically Mr. Salvador Dacer and Mr. Emmanuel Corbito,” he said in Filipino on Sunday.
Aquino also denied involvement in the murders, which happened during the waning months of the Estrada administration in November 2000.
“I sacrificed my career in exchange for freedom; uprooted my family and went on self-exile; and pursued other goals,” he said of his decision to leave the country years back.
As of this posting, Aquino is detained at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) headquarters in Manila.
According to its spokesperson Cecilia Zamora, Aquino will be put in a cell alongside 20 other inmates with no special treatment.
Earlier, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said she is hoping that the former police officer can shed light to the puzzling death of Estrada’s former publicist and his driver.
“Remember he is an accused. I think he would be more preoccupied with preparing for his defenses but whether or not it is that, we are still going to summon him in the reinvestigation,” she said.
Last March 18, the Court of Appeals quashed with finality a motion that reinstates the warrant of arrest against Lacson, who evaded prosecution for more than a year.
It also warned De Lima of possible criminal charge of arbitrary detention if she continues the manhunt operations against the senator, who surfaced a week after the court handed its decision.
In a text message, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said Aquino arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA)-Terminal 2 from the United States at 6:42 a.m. Sunday on board Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight 103.
He was escorted by five agents from the NBI who fetched him from his detention cell at the Hudson County jail in New Jersey before boarding a plane in Los Angeles last Friday back to Manila.
Aquino, a former police officer at the defunct Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force, was denied by the US Court of Appeals last April to stop his extradition.
He spent six years in jail starting in 2005 after pleading guilty to illegal possession of classified documents which reportedly contain White House information about then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
