Education department supports ‘offensive’ billboards removal
July 13, 2011
THE Department of Education (DepEd) has supported an agency’s move to remove billboards that feature scantily clad models and actors.
Billboards, especially those with “offensive” content, are difficult to hide from children, compared to advertisements of the same nature showed on television, radio, and newspapers, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said on Tuesday.
“Unlike other media forms, parents cannot easily safeguard minors from billboards that are found in our highways,” Luistro said.
He made these remarks after he was asked about the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) move to remove billboards with “sexy” content.
Luistro also suggested that the advertising industry should come up with ads showing Filipino values and traditions.
“We in DepEd believe that our streets are the classroom of real life and what our students and young people see and experience on the way to and from school must be consistent with Filipino values and what parents hope they can learn in school,” he added.
Billboards removed by the MMDA include those featuring actresses Anne Curtis and Angel Locsin in Boni Avenue-Mandaluyong, showing both of them wearing brassieres; and the ads of Azkal’s skipper Ali Borromeo and Phil Younghusband located along North-Edsa, Santolan, Crame, and Guadalupe in Makati.
These initiatives were part of the agency’s “Operation Roll Down, Baby,” a campaign against illegal billboards that began last May.
An estimated 90 billboards per kilometer are installed along EDSA, the Philippines’ busiest thoroughfare. Many of these 2000 structures are located along the thoroughfare with the bulk located in Makati city, the country’s business and financial capital, and in Pasay, Quezon City and Mandaluyong.
