Education agency allots 12.5 billion for new classrooms
April 28, 2011
ANGELES CITY — The Department of Education (DepEd) has allotted at least P12.5 billion for the construction of new classrooms and purchase of new school furniture across the country.
Reynaldo Laguda, assistant secretary at the DepEd, said the budget seeks to address the lack of classrooms in public elementary and high schools nationwide.
“The budget is for basic education facilities like new classrooms including school furniture,” Laguda said.
However, Laguda admitted that the education department cannot resolve the problem of insufficient classrooms within the year alone.
“We recognize that we cannot address full shortage in a year but we are looking at additions for our budget for new classrooms,” he said.
While new classrooms are yet to be built, the education official said they will make use of school offices that have not been used, to be converted into classrooms.
Laguda was one of the guests of honor during a food chain’s groundbreaking ceremonies of an ongoing construction of a classroom in Pulung Bulu Elementary School.
He said the food chain is one of the private companies that responded to the Aquino administration’s program of private-public partnership.
