EdPam shrugs-off chairman’s defection to Lazatin
ANGELES CITY–“He is no loss to me, since he never supported me in the first place,” retorted Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan on the “defection” of Barangay Chairman Val Lagman of Claro M. Recto.
“He is just being true to what he really has always been—a loud-mouthed opportunist,” Pamintuan added.
Pamintuan said Lagman only supported him when he first ran for mayor in 1992, but only because he wanted to be in his line-up for councilors.
“He lost then, but he blamed his loss on me,” he said.
According to Pamintuan, Lagman expressed support to his administration only recently “but only because he was maneuvering to control the cockpit operations in the city.”
He explained that the cockpits in Angeles City are owned by private individuals, many of whom distrust Lagman.
“Neither I nor the city hall has any say on who should manage these cockpits, which Lagman wants to take over,” Pamintuan said.
Pamintuan also challenged Lagman to show proof that he allowed a waste disposal company to dump wastes in the city’s creeks and river.
“Everybody knows that one of my top programs is to clean and clear our waterways of wastes and garbage. I, myself, participate in the regular clean-up of Sapang Balen and Abacan, and I never remember Lagman lending a hand. All of a sudden, at my expense, he projects himself as a bleeding-heart environmentalist,” the mayor said.
Lagman, during a press conference Thursday at Lazatin’s jungle base, said Pamintuan allowed Soliman E.C. Septic Tank Disposal, a waste disposal firm, to discharge wastes at the city’s waterways. He also belittled Pamintuan’s humble beginnings, and questioned the mayor’s current economic status.
Dennis Soliman, proprietor of Soliman E.C. Septic Tank Disposal, denied dumping wastes in the city’s creeks and waterways and even clarified that his company has waste water treatment facility where they properly discharge septic tank disposal.
Soliman added that his company has a reputation of being highly competent in sanitary and industrial waste disposal as they have the required discharge permits and Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
“I am proud of my middle class status, and I also take pride of the fact that the Angeleños have voted me to office three times despite my being middle class, which actually broke the stranglehold of the rich families over the politics of Angeles City,” Pamintuan said.
“Lagman, who fashions himself as an activist, is now in effect saying that the rich, like his new master in Lazatin, have the sole franchise over Angeles politics,” he added.
He reminded Lagman that he is a lawyer, and had moneyed clients when he was a practicing lawyer, which allowed him to live comfortably.
“If he knows his class analysis, I should belong to the so-called upper middle class, primarily because of my professional efforts, but not in the class of the big landlords and compradors like Lazatin, whom he has allied with,” Pamintuan explained.
He added that if Lagman is obsessed with cockpit operations and cockfighting, he actually found a perfect partner in Lazatin, who is also a known cockfighting aficionado and big-time gambler.
“Perhaps fate has it that they should ally,” he said.
Pamintuan also defended the non-Kapampangans in his staff, whom Lagman also criticized. “I may have three non-Kapampangans in my staff, but I have of hundreds of Angeleños helping me out, too,” he said.
Lagman was particularly rabid against Jesus Eres, a retired US Air Force and Homeland Security personnel of the US Government, who has re-settled back in Angeles City, who is Pamintuan’s special assistant.
It was Eres who was instrumental in negotiating for medical equipment donations to Angeles City from the World Medical Relief Inc., which is based in the United States.
Lagman has blamed Eres for being unable to take control of the cockpit operations, according to the mayor.
In a radio interview also Thursday over GVFM-AM, Eres denied that he has been a stumbling block to Lagman’s cockfighting business. Eres admitted that, like Lagman, he is a promoter of cockfighting events, but has no control over cockpit arenas which are owned by private individuals.
“Lagman should talk to the owners, but it seems they do not like him,” Eres said.
