DSWD, PIA hold “Women and the Media” forum
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, March 26 (PIA) — Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Philippine Information Agency (PIA) recently conducted a forum on “Women and the Media” which was participated in by around 50 gender and development (GAD) focal persons coming from various local government units and civil society groups across Central Luzon.
“The event serves as one of our highlights of the celebration of Women’s Month in the region. We have teamed up with the PIA because we want to know the efforts of government and private media in empowering Filipinas” said DSWD Women Programs and Projects focal person Marites Liwanag.
Angeles Observer Editor-In-Chief Minerva Arceo discussed how media has slowly erased the common stereotypes on women.
“Decades ago, women portrayal in media particularly in film and television has always been someone that is weak, who cries a lot. Before, an ideal woman is someone who is sexy, has long hair, and demure. But thanks to the advent of liberal directors, we can now see strong female characters in movies and television. The stereotypes are slowly being removed” Arceo shared.
The print journalist admitted that the top management of Philippine media is still male-dominated hence she suggested for them to be invited in provincial, municipal, and city GAD councils for better appreciation and sensitivity to the opposite sex.
Meanwhile, PIA Tarlac Provincial Manager Carlo Lorenzo Datu tackled the various programs of his agency relative to GAD.
“In PIA Region 3, we write news stories not only to disseminate information but bring opportunities to women as well as feature stories of successful females that would hopefully inspire them” said Datu.
Moreover, PIA also produces Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials on women-themed advocacies such as Anti-Human Trafficking and conduct communication researches in order to determine the communication needs of the sector. (CLJD/RBRP-PIA 3)
