Drugs agency ‘sweeps’ Angeles jail

ANGELES CITY — Anti-narcotics operatives and jail authorities conducted a surprise inspection of prison cells at the Angeles City District Jail as part of the Operation Plan “Greyhound”.
Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Central Luzon Director Roybel Sanchez led the search of inmates’ belongings in a bid to find illegal drugs and other unlawful materials being kept by prisoners.
“The search is part of our routine to ensure that reformatory institutions are being kept away from illegal drug trafficking syndicates,” said Sanchez.
Although no illegal drugs were found during an almost four-hour search, Sanchez said a strip of aluminum foil believed to be used in sniffing shabu was found in one of the cells.
He declined, however, to believe that the said jail is “a steady market” of drug trafficking syndicates.
“The jail personnel are strict and disciplined,” said Sanchez, noting the tidiness of the facility and the prisoners.
He also cited the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology headed by Jail Senior Superintendent Igmedio Callos, regional director of the BJMP who joined in the search, for being cooperative while the PDEA agents were carrying out the search.
Callos told PDEA-Central Luzon agents that he has standing order to all jail wardens in Central Luzon not to allow even a small amount of illegal drugs inside the cells, or else face relief and administrative sanctions.
Operation Plan “Greyhound”, Sanchez said, is part of the PDEA-Central Luzon and local government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign to rid Pampanga and other areas of the region from the menace of society.
Last month, the Provincial Government and the PDEA launched an anti-drugs summit in Angeles City where they educated barangay officials and other stakeholders on the evils of illegal drugs.
The group also launched an all-out-war against drug trafficking syndicates.
At least two villages in Angeles City alone have been placed under close watch by PDEA operatives, following reports of the alleged existence of big-time illegal drug pushers.
The search at the Angeles District Jail is just part of a series of operations of similar institution throughout the region, Sanchez said. The next targets are provincial jails, he added.
