Drug firms in hot water for failure to submit price guides

PHARMACEUTICAL firms and drug stores may face cancellation or suspension of their licenses once they fail to adhere to transparency campaign of the Department of Health (DOH) on medicine prices.
Health Assistant Secretary Paulyn Ubial reminded in a statement drug companies and sellers that they must regularly submit to the government their monthly drug prices and inventories.
“Administrative sanctions shall be imposed for those who fail to submit the required data on the time specified without justifiable reason,” said Ubial.
Section 41 of the Cheaper Medicines Act states that: “The secretary of Health shall have the authority to impose administrative sanctions such as suspension or cancellation of license to operate or recommend suspension of license to practice profession to the Professional Regulation Commission as the case may be for the violation of this Act”.
Last week, the DOH announced that starting next month; it will regularly release and post the Quarterly Price Medicine Report and Annual Factsheet at the DOH website.
This, after drug manufacturers, distributors, drugstores, and hospital pharmacies had submitted the needed information by the DOH during the first working days of each month.
Also, drugstore chains with more than four outlets shall be asked to comply effective January 2012.
“The Electronic Drug Price Monitoring System (EDPMS) allows for greater transparency in the pharmaceutical sector by providing information on drugs and medicines for consumers nationwide,” said the health official.
“The Price Medicines Report (PMR) will be very useful to consumers or patients. This can guide them where certain medicines are available and how much they cost,” Ubial added.
Republic Act 9502 mandates the DOH to ensure universal access to medicines and establish a drug price monitoring system. (AMN/Sunnex)
