DPWH sets deadline for cut off channel in Pampanga
December 07, 2010
ARAYAT, Pampanga, Dec. 7 (PNA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has set a 55-day deadline for the construction of the cut off channel along the portion of Pampanga River in barangay Guemasan this town.
Engr. William Bustos, assistant chief of the DPWH Construction Division, said the dredging activity in the area started Wednesday last week upon the instruction of the DPWH executives and the provincial government of Pampanga.
“We are targeting to finish the dredging of the cut off channel within 55 days or even earlier,” he said.
The cut off project has a total budget of P25 million allocated by the national government through the request of Governor Lilia Pineda and former President and now Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in one of the meetings with DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson.
Bustos said they have been working in two shifts.
He said they even asked workers to work overtime to finish the project as scheduled taking into consideration the number of residents to be affected and extent of damages that may be incurred.
The cut off channel is expected to weaken the strong current bombarding Guemasan Dike, particularly during rainy season, Bustos said.
“We expect the flow of water from the Pampanga river be divided wherein 50 percent will divert to the cut off channel once it is finished,” he said. (PNA)
