Dong scholar is HAU cum laude

MEXICO — Katrina Ann Tumang, a long-time Iskolar ng Dong beneficiary, was recently hailed as this year’s cum laude for Holy Angel University’s (HAU) Mass Communications program.
Tumang is the daughter of Nelson Tumang, a jeepney driver, and plain housewife Remedios Liwanag-Tumang. She is the oldest of eight siblings and has been a consistent dean’s lister during her years at HAU.
Her teachers said that Tumang had been very conscious of her academic performance in the classroom and has been an active member of many organizations and activities in school.
Tumang, who hails from San Jose Malino in this town, said she plans to pursue a career in mass media and hopes to work with a media outfit where she could excel as a professional.
“I am very thankful for the help and support of my family, friends and teachers and especially for the support given to me by Congressman Gonzales,” Tumang said, adding that the scholarship program of Gonzales was a great help in her studies and in meeting other financial responsibilities of her course.
Third District Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. had instituted the “Iskolar ng Dong” program in a bid to provide scholarship assistance to indigent students of the district. Currently, Gonzales maintains hundreds of scholars in pre-school, elementary, high school and college.
Gonzales, in an interview, said he plans to expand the number of scholars under the program. Currently, his staff is screening possible scholars to replace those who graduated for School Year 2010-2011.
