DOH-3 to strengthen Central Luzon blood services network
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—Department of Health-Center for Health Development 3 (DOH-CHD 3) plans to strengthen blood
services network in Central Luzon by providing the policies and guidelines in operation, defining its roles and functions and describing the structures, systems and processes in blood collection.
“We are expecting an increase in voluntary blood donation with thisnetwork,” Susan Reyes, blood donation coordinator, said.
A Blood Services Network is an informal organization that aims toprovide for the blood needs of a specific geographical area or catchment population.
It is composed of designated lead Blood Services Facilities (BSF), hospital blood banks, blood collection units (BCU), blood stations(BS), end-user hospital, and non-hospital health facilities.
Republic Act 7719 or the National Blood Services Act of 1994 mandatesthe health department to establish and organize a National BloodTransfusion Service Network in order to rationalize and improve theprovision of adequate and safe supply of blood.
Last year, 93,831 whole blood were collected corresponding to ninefor every 1, 000 population in the region, quite far from the target115,027 or 11 per 1, 000 population.
“Apart from strengthening the Blood Services Network, we will alsoprovide training on donor retention, care and management; reinforcethe advocacy with local chief executives to sustain blood donationactivities; and assist BSFs to maintain donor registry and improverecord management,” Reyes added.
