Doctors deny advising Arroyo to seek treatment abroad

DOCTORS of former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo denied that they advised their patient to seek medical treatment abroad.
“Among us members of the team, we never said those statements that she [was] in critical condition and needed to seek medical treatment abroad,” Dr. Juliet Gopez-Cervantes, Arroyo’s attending physician, said.
Earlier, Raul Lambino, the former President’s legal spokesperson, was quoted as saying that Arroyo’s physicians have recommended a medical treatment for her abroad.
But save for Arroyo’s low calcium count last week, there was no cause for concern regarding her condition, said Cervantes.
The former President’s attending physician also announced that Arroyo’s surgery will be performed earlier than scheduled after resolving an infection.
The infection prevented doctors from conducting a reconstructive surgery last week after the titanium implants in her spine got dislocated.
Arroyo’s “malfunctioning parathyroid” glands and some “metabolic issues” led to the infection.
“Her malfunctioning parathyroid, not just infection, contributed to the failure of the second surgery, that’s why the implant did not take off,” said Dr. Brian Cabral, head of St. Lukes Renal Diseases and Transplant Services.
Meanwhile, the cervical spine surgery may be done on Tuesday next week, Cervantes said.
“We decided the next surgery will be held earlier than scheduled, tentatively on Tuesday, subject to further evaluation,” Gopez-Cervantes said when she announced the medical bulletin on the former chief executive’s condition.
She added that Arroyo was in stable condition.
The operation will involve placing a mesh with bone grafts — tissues taken from her pelvic bones — on Arroyo’s cervical spine to help strengthen the implant that was placed before.
Arroyo will require three to four weeks of rest to ensure that fusion will take place so that her halo vest (the external support on her neck) can be removed.
“With regard to her third surgery, we hope that it will be successful after addressing the metabolic issues,” Cabral said.
Arroyo “can walk around, talk, eat, and watch TV,” though he added, news programs and newspapers are off-limits to her so as not to cause her further stress in the days before the surgery.
