Divorce not a priority of the Aquino administration

PRESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino III on Thursday set aside proposals seeking to legalize divorce in the country, saying it is not a priority of his administration “at the moment.”
In an interview in Brunei, the President said he would rather focus on the priority measures of his government than venturing to another contentious issue like the House Bill 1799.
“My promise are job generation, education, health, judicial reform, and we are doing all of that already. The responsible parenthood bill, with the ability of the state to help all these families… divorce I think is not a priority at this time,” he said.
Aquino said he could not categorically say whether he would end up supporting the bill or not.
The chief executive also expressed preference for an extensive debate regarding the issue in line with his personal position during the presidential campaign last year.
“Ayokong padaliin yung proseso na ang impression ay katulad na nga ng lahat sa Las Vegas — kasal ka sa umaga, puwedeng ma-divorce ka sa hapon. Napaka-importante ang pamilya na dapat ma-address ang lahat ng concerns,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that there are marital break-ups that are beyond repair and these should also be considered.
“There has to be a way out where they are able to regain the right to marry but they have to go through a very exhaustive process that will give them stuff to rethink whether or not they want to dissolve the family,” he said.
President Aquino once said that divorce is a “no-no” for him and he would prefer legal separation, which allows people to marry again.
Meantime, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda refused to comment on the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showing that more Filipinos are now favoring divorce.
He said Malacañang respects the opinion of the public but remain neutral on the issue.
Church shrugs off survey
The same survey was shrugged off by an official of the influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
Gaining a favorable opinion from the majority of Filipinos will not prompt the Church to withdraw its opposition against it, CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Family and Life (ECFL) executive secretary Fr. Melvin Castro said in a phone interview.
“We don’t put so much importance to the surveys kasi you don’t put into numbers, counts a very moral issue na tulad ng divorce. I think, whatever the survey might say, we do not put too much importance to it,” said Castro.
“What is 50 percent? Kahit 60 percent pa iyan, it does not really count,” he added.
Castro, then, reiterated the church’s stand to oppose the attempts to legalize divorce in the country saying it is not the solution to marital problems.
“The solution to a marital problem is to strengthen it all the more. Hindi yung lalo nating pahihinain,” the Church official said. (Jill Beltran/AMN/Sunnex)
