Diesel from damaged pipeline contaminates water in Bataan
DINALUPIHAN, Bataan–Oil leak due to damaged pipeline on Tuesday continued to contaminate household water and threatening to pollute the big river in Barangay San Pablo here.
The threat looms despite the repair made to the pipeline which was accidentally damaged while the sub-contractor of the telecommunication company was reportedly laying out the telephone lines in the area last November 29.
The damaged pipeline is part of the 64-kilometer oil line from Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority to Clark Freeport in Pampanga.
Godofredo de Guzman, environment and natural resources officer of Bataan, said of the 11 shallow and deep wells in Barangay San Pablo, nine were contaminated with five of the wells already pumping big percentage of diesel fuel.
“The oil leaked with pressure which was sucked by soil and now reached up to the water table,” he said.
De Guzman brought with him laboratory technicians of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) to examine the extent of contamination of household water and water in the river.
“We do not have water to drink and use,” resident Reynaldo Diwa said as he showed the diesel fuel coming out of his shallow tube well.
Diwa appealed to whoever caused the damage on the oil pipeline to supply them with water.
Another resident showed his jetmatic pump spouting diesel instead of water.
Many containers filled with diesel fuel were seen in the area and some residents continued to get diesel fuel from holes they bore below the riverbank.
The residents said they were provided with pieces of cloth allegedly by the Philippine Coastal Storage and Pipeline Corporation(PCSPC) to separate the oil from water.
PCSPC is the owner of the pipelines that run from SBMA to Clark.
