DHVTSU to hold grand celebration for 150th anniversary

February 7, 2011

BACOLOR — The Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) has started preparations for its 150th founding anniversary celebrations next year, marking the long history of the institution in shaping the province’s youth.
DHVTSU president Enrique Baking told Sun.Star Pampanga that the event will include cultural and socio-civic programs that will highlight organizations and partners of DHVTSU.
He said that the majority of the program events will be handled by students as well as former graduates of the once state college.

“The good Congressman Dong Gonzales has also committed to fund some of the events and projects for the celebration,” Baking said, stressing that the event is equally important as they will also be celebrating the second anniversary of the institution as a state university.
Baking also bared plans for a souvenir coffee table book chronicling the 150-year of DHVTSU. The book will include a complete history of DHVTSU from being a former trade school to the only state university in Pampanga. The book is expected to be released in time for the DHVTSU’s founding anniversary celebrations.
The school was officially founded on November 4, 1861 upon the approval of its statutes by Governor-General Lemery and was then called “Escuela de Artes Y Oficios de Bacolor.”
DHVTSU, before becoming a state university, was given different names as it expanded its scope and services throughout its history. It was also known as Pampanga Trade School in 1909 and became popularly known as the “Trade School” or the “Poor Man’s College.” By virtue of Republic Act 1388, the school was converted into a Regional School of Arts and Trades, and was renamed Pampanga School of Arts and Trades (PSAT).
In 1964, the school was renamed Don Honorio Ventura Memorial School of Arts and Trades (DHVMSAT) in honor of Don Honorio Ventura, a prominent son of Bacolor who was a statesman and philanthropist and later to Don Honorio Ventura College of Arts and Trades (DHVCAT).
In June 2009, Gonzales committed his time and efforts to pursuing House Bill 6319, “An Act Converting DHVCAT into Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University.”
