DENR team nets P5M worth of hot logs in Aurora-Quezon
January 24, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO,(PNA) — At least 3,000 pieces of hot logs worth P5 million were confiscated by an 81-man joint forest protection team in an anti- illegal logging campaign that started last week in the Sierra Madre mountains along Umiray River in the boundary of Aurora and Quezon provinces, environment authorities announced on Saturday.
This brings to over 200,000 board feet the total volume of hot logs already confiscated since efforts to lick the problem of organized timber poaching was launched in 2006 by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Dingalan-Gen. Nakar area here, reported executive director Ricardo Calderon of the DENR Central Luzon office.
Most of the hot logs that were floated down the Umiray River came from cutting sites found inside the 12,000-hectare private timber land of Green Circle Properties in the Quezon side of the Sierra Madre Mountains.
Green Circle Properties has since extended logistical support and sent security guards to augment DENR forest protection teams patrolling the area.
Marching orders from DENR Secretary Ramon Paje placed eight monitoring stations and DENR checkpoints on red alert in a bid to root out timber poachers and neutralize illegal logging hotspots in the tri-boundary of Aurora, Nueva Ecija, and Bulacan in Central Luzon.
“We are closely coordinating with forest protection officers from Quezon to synchronize our efforts and level up our surveillance and monitoring activities in the Dingalan-Gen. Nakar area,” Calderon explained, adding that big-time financiers from Mauban, Quezon are bankrolling timber poaching operations to supply local woodworks and pallet manufacturing industry in Southern Luzon.
Paje earlier announced that curbing illegal logging remains to be their top priority, even as local officials and police have been implicated in illegal logging activities.
In Bataan, DENR authorities filed illegal logging charges against Bagac Mayor Rommel Del Rosario after 1,000 board feet of undocumented lumber loaded on a government truck registered to the town government was found in his private residence.
Del Rosario, who described the sawmill in front of his house as “carpentry machine”, has been under surveillance by DENR operatives for the past six months after being tagged by concerned residents of Bagac as behind the illegal logging trade in his town.
The DENR also recommended the filing of administrative and criminal case against Del Rosario’s police chief, Sr. Inspector George Santiago, after 1,896 board feet of confiscated lumber due for donation to the Department of Education (DepEd) “disappeared” under his custody.
Since 2006, the DENR in Cental Luzon confiscated 870,000 board feet of contraband forest products worth P29 million, and filed over 150 illegal logging cases in local courts. (PNA)
