Denali area shooters to discuss new rifle range

FAIRBANKS — Hunters and recreational shooters in the Denali Borough usually settle for whatever gravel pit they can find to practice their marksmanship, since they have no formal shooting range in the area.
“For years, we’ve all gone out and found a place to sight our rifles in,” borough Mayor Dave Talerico said. “It sounds like folks are wanting something a little more organized than that.”
As a result, Talerico has set up a town hall meeting in Cantwell on tonight to gauge interest in building a shooting range in the community just south of Denali Park. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cantwell School.
“The south end of the borough is full of hunters, outdoorsmen and recreational shooters,” Talerico said. “I just recently was down in Cantwell and I had a couple of people down there say they’d have an interest in helping with something like this.”
Liability insurance and location are two of the big issues. “We’ve got a lot of questions we need to talk about,” he said.
The borough doesn’t own much property in the Cantwell area, but Talerico said he planned to inquire if Ahtna Inc., the Alaska Native regional corporation that owns considerable land in the area, might help with the project. The formation of a local sportsmen’s club, which could help maintain a facility as well as work with the National Rifle Association to get insurance, is another topic he wants to broach.
Talerico said there aren’t any plans for a range at the moment.
“I think we’ve got substantial interest,” he said. “I’m real interested in seeing what ideas the people down in Cantwell have. They’re some of the most industrious and independent people you’ll ever meet.”
