Counseling important for flood victims

A CHILD psychologist recommended counseling as part of Davao City’s crisis intervention to avoid psychological trauma especially among children victims of the flashfloods.
Dr. Herminia Ugay, a child clinical psychologist, said it is critical for these victims to express their feelings toward what had happened to them during their ordeal.
“Labi na ang mga bata kay wa ta kabalo unsay effect ana sa ilaha in the future, mayo jud na habang sayo pa mapagawas nila unsa ilang fears (We do not know what are the effects in children most especially, it would be better that as early as now, they can express their fears),” Ugay said.
She added that trained counselors can also help with the debriefing. She encouraged the schools in the area nearby that are not affected to provide counseling.
“It would really help them and maayo jud unta kung as early as now, ma catch nimo ilang feelings nga naa pa sila sa mga evacuation center kay kung makauli na sila sa ilang mga balay or ma-relocate na sila, mawala na sa ilaha katung mga nahitabo, pero it will still linger sa ilaha subconsciously (It would be better to filter those fears while they are still in evacuation center because once they go back home or relocate somewhere else, it will be difficult to identify them and process these fears),” Ugay said.
The recent flashflood in five barangays displaced 13,741 families with 31 fatalities, most of them children.
Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said the City Social Services Development Office (CSSDO) is taking care of the debriefing of the victims in the five barangays.
“Yes, it very important and CSSDO is doing it,” Villafuerte added.
The City Intervention Unit (CIU) of CSSDO headed by Desiree N. Pingol, social welfare IV, said that while psychological intervention is in their program, their immediate concern now are relief efforts.
“Naa nami plano for that pero wala pa nakasa pagkatapos na ng relief operation na kami mag-uumpisa kasi ang mga residents doon busy pa sa paglilinis ng kanilang mga bahay at saka wala pang lugar para sa counseling (The program is there but we will start on it only after relief operations because there is no space for counseling; the residents are still very busy cleaning their homes),” Pingol said.
