Council Okays rain harvesting resolution

THE Baguio City Council last week approved a resolution endorsing rainwater harvesting in public schools and barangays in the city.
The approved resolution requested the Baguio Water District (BWD), City Environment Parks and Management Office (Cepmo) and City Building and Architecture Office (CBAO) to encourage other institutions and barangay households to “devise ways to do simple rainwater harvesting to minimize dependence on commercial water supply and to maximize the use of rainwater made available by nature.”

Authored by Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, the technique for collecting rainwater water may be termed as “household rainfall catchment system” with water to be used for laundry, gardening, flushing toilets and others.
The simple technique requires the construction of three principal components: the catchment area, collection device and the conveyance system.
The catchment should be from the rooftop, where the rainwater would drop into the conveyance system down to a collection device. Impurities would be allowed to settle before the rainwater is directed to a storing device.
The resolution was also anchored on Republic Act 6716, which provided “for the construction of water wells, rainwater collectors, development of springs and rehabilitation of existing water wells in all barangay in the Philippines to be able to provide adequate water supply as a provision of the social services program of the government.” (Julie G.
