Cotabato mayor hit for criticizing Aquino

MALACANANG on Thursday scored Cotabato City Mayor Japal Guiani after he alleged that President Benigno Aquino III failed to distribute relief packs and send aid to the province.
“There is no basis to Mayor Guiani’s prevarication that the National Government has not sent relief or aid to Cotabato City, going as far as accusing the President of not bringing relief goods,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
“When Cotabato City Mayor Guiani goes before national media to tell lies, your government is obligated to tell the truth,” Lacierda added.
The Palace official said the food packs distributed by the President to the displaced victims in Cotabato came from the National Government.
Even before the President visited the province, the National Government has been sending relief and assistance to local government units in Mindanao to assist residents affected by the massive flooding.
Lacierda noted that the National Government already spent P12 million for operations in the flooded areas in Mindanao, of which P7 million came from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
In Cotabato alone, the DSWD has provided more than P7 million worth of food and non-food items to affected families.
He also stressed that the Department of Health already provided medicines worth P70,000.
The equipment being used for the clearing of the Delta bridge were also provided by the National Government, added Lacierda.
The President went to Cotabato City on Wednesday to personally oversee relief operations and to inspect the progress of efforts to assist the city’s residents.
In a television interview, Cotabato City Mayor Guiani expressed dismay over the President’s visit, saying he failed to give concrete plans on how to address the province’s problem on flooding.
He said the President’s trip was merely intended for a visit and no relief or aid was provided for the flood victims that came from the national government supplies.
“The mayor of Cotabato City has done his constituents a disservice. Instead of attending to their needs, he chose to tell lies and pass the buck,” said Lacierda. “At a time that calls for solidarity to effectively assist our countrymen in Mindanao, it is unfortunate that some officials choose to politicize relief efforts.” (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
